WELCOME TO THE FORTUNE COOKIE DOOR
----------------------------------
This is a simple door to give your caller's a chance to increase
their time for the current call. Despite it's simplicity,
many of your callers will enjoy it. A lot more work than one
might think has gone into making this door fun and easy to
use.

this archive (COOKIE.ZIP) all you want, provided all these files
are included in the archive and are not altered in any way.

PROGRAM OUTLINE
---------------
This door is a simple way to give your caller's a shot
at INCREASING their online TIME for the current call.
Unlike most other doors that do that, this one also has
consequences. Sometimes the caller will LOSE time for
the current call.
Here's the plot:
You've consumed your take-out Chinese food. Now it's time to
crack open your fortune cookie. What will your fortune be?
Will it be positive or negative, hopeful or threatening?
That's right...
Some fortunes will be good ones. They will be printed in
BLUE LETTERS. They will increase the caller's time.
Some fortunes will be innocuous. They will be printed in
BLACK LETTERS. They will do nothing but amuse or enlighten.
And some will be downright evil. They will be printed in
RED LETTERS. They will decrease the caller's time.
And sometimes...well...to be honest...three times out of
one hundred, something really evil will happen....Your
caller will receive a short message and then be abruptly
logged off the system. <Grin> (I know you've wanted to
do this many times!)
Only one play per day allowed.
INSTALLATION:
-------------
As a wcCode application, Fortune Cookie should be a snap to
install. Absolutely, hassle-free!
1) To keep things organized, create a sub-directory somewhere for
your copy of FORTUNE COOKIE.
2) Move all the files that came with the archive to this directory.
3) For the REGISTERED version, modify the CFG file
appropriately. (See CFG.DOC.)
4) Run MAKEWILD, and add the program FORTUNE.WCX to your Doors menu.
5) Run WCDRAW or whatever you prefer to edit your ANSI and RIP
menu screens.
6) Fortune Cookie is now good-to-go. Enjoy!
FILES CREATED BY FORTUNE COOKIE
-------------------------------
There are a few files which will be created in the current
Fortune Cookie directory.
-SCORES.BBS is the Hall of Fame bulletin that the
caller's see from inside the door.
-COOKIE.LOG is the log of callers who have played
fortune cookie each day. No maintenance is required.
-FORTUNE.DAT is a reference file for Fortune Cookie.
No maintenance is required.
OTHER FILE DETAILS
-------------
BEG.BBS - If it exists, this file will be displayed to
callers upon entering the door. You could use this as
an "adopt-a-door" type screen. If not present, it is
ignored.
SCORES.BBS - Fortune Cookie will produce a score file
called SCORES.BBS in the current fortune cookie directory.
This file will only list caller's who have received a
positive, negative or evil fortune. Innocuous fortunes
will not be listed. You can copy the file in a BAT file to
your appropriate bulletin directory (or register Fortune
Cookie--it's only five bucks--and we'll do it for you!).
MAINTENANCE REQUIRED
-----------
Unregistered: The only maintenance that may need to be done
is on the SCORES.BBS file. None whatsoever is done by the
program. You may want to delete this file and start fresh from
time to time. It could easily be done as a weekly or
monthly event.
Registered: None. We're Sysops. We're workin' too hard already.
By default, the file will be deleted the first play of the
month.
OTHER STUFF
-----------
Fortune Cookie generates a "random" numbers in the course
of play. This determines the text of the fortune the caller
will receive and whether a good/bad/evil fortune will be
generated.
Fortune cookie will record its use in your Activity.log.
It will record when a user "opens" a fortune cookie, and
what kind of a fortune cookie it was (if it was good/bad or
evil; innocuous fortunes are assumed). It also details
how much time the caller won or lost. A number is tagged
onto this line in your log. This number is the "random"
number mentioned above.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
---------------
Thanks to all the users of my BBS, Summa Nulla, that helped
to beta test this and all previous and future versions of
Fortune Cookie.
This wcCODE door was programmed by Martin Blackwell from
an original idea by co-Sysop Marco Garrett and Martin.
It has been beta tested on Summa Nulla BBS (213) 957-2562.
I would like to thank Mustang Software Inc. for the
making wcCode available to us. And the MSI BBS wcCode
support team for helping me learn the ins and outs of
wcCode. KUDOS, guys!
BUG REPORTS
-----------
Hopefully, there are none. But you know how that goes.
I can be reached by a comment to Sysop at the above phone
number; the address listed in the registration form, or
at martin.blackwell@nulla.com.
REGISTERING
-----------
This door will work fine on your BBS just as it is. If
you don't care about customizing it, or making me happy,
there is no need to register.
For information on registering Fortune Cookie, see the file
REGISTER.FRM, which should be contained in the original archive.
Once you register you will receive a CONFIG file with
registration number that will enable you to modify certain
aspects of the door:
* Change the Maximum Time that can be ADDED to the caller's
time left for the call. Unregistered default: 60 minutes.
* Change the Maximum Time that can be SUBTRACTED from the
callers current time left. Default: 60 minutes. (If
subtracting 60 minutes would result in a negative number,
the caller's time left for the call is set to 1 minute.)
* Get rid of that pesky "UNREGISTERED BBS" message and include
your BBS name.
* Keep scores by either caller's real Name or caller's Alias.
Default: real name.
* Toggle RUDENESS on or off. Default: Rudeness ON.
* Automatically write the SCORES.BBS file to the directory
of your choice, with the name of your choice.
* Delete the Scores file at first play of each month.
* Your registration code will always work with any possible
future version. (You will not be contacted however.)
* You gain self-esteem and the respect of other Sysops <G>.
THANK YOU for trying FORTUNE COOKIE!
